This project was for a very challenging developmental edit, as you will see by the sample I was given. I had to embellish the text to keep the reader interested. Often with a medical or self-help book the author can gets too technical. I will give you a sample of the edit I was given to show you the work I do.
SAMPLE DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT for NON-FICTION
OBSTACLES TO HEAL
Your present self holds the power to transform into your grandest self. To actualize the grandest vision of all you can be, you must first define who your grandest self is. You must then have a clear mental image of the character that is present in your grandest self. It is not enough to desire moving away from certain characteristics that are in your present self. To transform one must be clear about what you are moving towards. You must believe that you are destined to express yourself as your grandest self and enjoy what that expression would feel like when you reflect on the present self. Your heart must sense with full certainty that you are being guided. When you think, feel and believe that you are meant to be your grandest self you will start to express the characteristics you defined.
Did you know that your present self holds the power to transform into your grandest self?

POWER OF SPIRIT
The manifestation of spirit is not the thought of mind alone. It comes from your ability to use the strength of your mind by focusing on the condition of the body. Your state of consciousness, and sensations of the body, dissolves into our psyche causing all manifestation going beyond any previous thought, and what exists afterthought. Let us carefully analyze and define the SPIRIT and SOUL, but before we do, let us look at our dictionary definitions because will be discussing them in much more depth over the following pages.
DEFINITION OF SPIRIT
- The spirit is the non-physical part of a person–the seat of emotions and character
- The quality of courage, energy, and determination or assertiveness
- The attitude or intentions with which someone undertakes or regards something
DEFINITION OF SOUL
- The spiritual or immaterial part of a human being, or animal, regarded as immortal
- It is a person’s moral or emotional nature or sense of identity
- The essence of something
The state of spirit goes beyond the cravings of pleasure. There is no fear or rejection of pain, and it is where the spirit, in all its glory, can be fully experienced. The practice of conditioning the body for spiritual revelation might seem tiresome and overwhelming, and the mind will find reasons to deny, and doubt the spiritual power that lies within.
The mind will fight you to stay in power by rejecting all that does not fit into the model of what is already familiar to it. To give power to the spirit is to deny the mind its conditioned responses. Often it will trick, torment, and continually suggest that you are crazy. For the spirit to enter, the mind must be silent, with all prior knowing released as the consciousness becomes pure and untouched.
The spirit will speak to you through faith, knowing, art, music, stories and your imagination. All these forms of attempting to communicate with consciousness are things that are open to the interpretation and analysis of the mind during which most people fail to access spirit.
To understand Spirit, one becomes in a state of NO MIND.
The mind with all its cleverness, and amazing capacities, is still limited and filled with fear, doubt, worry, and anxiety. Then on top of that, there are rules, limitations, judgments, likes, and dislikes.
Your mind tends to fall on past experiences to predict future results, instead of living in the realm of possibility.
To live in the spirit is to access pure faith in the Universe.
To have faith is to know and express the limitless, timeless power that is ever-present within each of us. The workings of the mind can often cloud our purpose. The path to finding and fulfilling that purpose gets embedded in the spirit.
- Only the spirit can guide us to the realization of fulfillment.
- Only the mind will tell us if we are living the life we came here to live.
- Only your spirit can teach you the inner workings of the silent, yet supremely significant, reasons for our very existence.
Living day to day in this world requires the constant use of your mind. We have to deal with many other thoughts simply to get along. The mind is always working in personal and work relationships, as well as casual daily interactions with business owners, workers, and professionals.
The mind is cunning and manipulative. It is fearful and wants to survive at all costs knowing that it can die. In fact, the mind will do anything to be right! All fear of death exists in the spirit, but the spirit does not fear death and is not interested in the games that other minds play. To deny the mind is to strengthen the spirit.
A consciousness riveted in spirit will face the challenge of not being understood by those entrenched in the mind. Here is what we do:
- The mind will both appreciate and reject the activities of spirit
- The mind will praise and promote, and then it will complain, compare and ridicule the operations of a consciousness embedded in spirit
- The mind does not understand and does not want to follow the mind
The nature of mind gets filled with instability.
The memory sticks to what is familiar, but it gets easily bored. It needs constant stimulation and entertainment to preoccupy the mind. It likes to be familiar because it likes to feel safe. Being very concerned about its survival and familiarity provides a sense of safety. However, a consciousness that is experiencing life with constant familiarity will soon become bored. In an attempt to entertain itself, the mind seeks something novel, something new, and exciting. The mind’s nature is to oscillate back and forth when it becomes familiar; you will be bored. If you experience too much change and feel uncertain about everything, it leaves the mind tense and un-rested.
Mind and body are interconnected and interdependent.
They are always influencing each other. The mind is not the brain. The brain is part of the body, and the mind is in all areas of the body. Every cell, every atom within the human body is mind, and its influence felt throughout the body.
The mind and the body are one and the same.
This mind-body complexity is never without influence on the other. What affects the body so, in turn, affects the mind and vice versa? Everything that is consciously and subconsciously experienced by a human being, conditions the human mind/body complexity.
The mind/body can be conditioned positively or negatively, but this does not apply to spirit. The spirit is beyond such influence.
Spirit is pure faith . . . Experience does not determine its capacities!
Experiences will shape, change, and influence the mind . . . And, so, in turn will the body. However, the spirit is beyond experience. It is the strength to cope, whether right or wrong and to exert our will in ways that promote our very reason for being. Your spirit can die without hesitation and live without fear.
Spirit is Unchanging – The Powerful!
Spirit is the reason we seek the eternal. It is the original core of all that we are, all as we were born, unchanged by life experience, and unmoved by death—a part of us before we develop mental, emotional, and physical faculties. For in spirit, we find the power to drive towards all pursuits and passions—despite failure, pain, disappointment, and despair.
